Changing careers is a very scary thing, something that many people choose NOT to do simply because they’re too scared.
Unfortunately, it is also quite normal to feel a handful (or maybe more than a handful) of other emotions as well. And to be quite frank, those emotions are not at all happy. You might encounter:
Of course, if you take a look at those few that I’ve mentioned, you can see that none of them are positive. And it’s the truth, though I’m sure not too many people want to admit it.
Though you may face a few of these feelings, or all of them and more, it’s important to remember that it’s completely normal and justified that you feel this way. I think that sometimes people make the unfortunate mistake of thinking too critically about how they’re feeling and then refuse to deal with those feelings. Or they choose bad ways to try to deal with them. My thing is…
At the end of the day, you feel that way.
But now what do you do?
You deal with those feelings, accept them, and move on.
In fact, the best thing you can do is keep on moving.
Don’t have any motivation to do anything? Read this. (Seriously, read it. I read it when I needed some motivation. You should too.)
Put a game plan together. List everything out that you need to get done. List them by priority. Start tackling them one by one. If you get overwhelmed at the list, cover everything up except for #1. Once you get that done, cross it out and move on to #2.
The absolute worst thing that you can do when you’re in a funk like this is to sit around and do nothing. Sitting around and worrying about where to start or how to start or what to do will only encourage those negative feelings to come back to the forefront of your mind and you’ll get nothing accomplished. Then, after hours have passed and you know it’s time to go to bed, you’ll have absolutely nothing completed and you’ll be exhausted from thinking too hard about something that isn’t that hard at all.
Just remember that changing careers is a very rough and time-consuming thing. It doesn’t happen overnight. If you really want to be on this journey to make yourself a happier person in life and be content with what you’ll do professionally, take one step at a time.
Just remember that you’ll have to take the first step to get started.
